Guangxi University for Nationalities
Guangxi University for Nationalities was founded
in 1952，( formerly Guangxi Nationalities Institute); On February, 2006,
the institute was approved by Chinese Ministry of Education to rename
as “Guangxi University for Nationalities”. In 2005, State Ethnic Affairs
Commission and The People Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region signed an agreement to work together for a better Guangxi University
for Nationalities. As a comprehensive university, our university has
a large instructional scale, various kinds of discipline categories,
high pedagogical quality and great influence; it is one of the two key
construction universities in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region during
the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period.
Guangxi University for Nationalities located in the beautiful western
suburbs of Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Lake Xiangsi.
It has an area of 132 hectare, divided into east and west campus. University
includes 19 schools, 58 undergraduate majors, 2 primary discipline master
programs, 42 sub-fields within the academic discipline master programs
and 4 professional master degree programs. All of these covered Philosophy,
History, Jurisprudence, Pedagogy, Literature, Management Science, Natural
Science, Engineering, Economics, total 9 disciplines. Enrolled students
numbered 18,000，education object contains graduate student, undergraduate
student, junior college student, preparatory student, foreign student
and continuing education student.
Our university has 26 professional laboratories, 25 language laboratories；Nearly
1,400,000 volumes and 11,006 kinds of magazines are in the library.
In addition, around the subject construction, we build “Professional
Virtual Digital Library”, “Navigation System”, Princess Sirindhorn Thai
Information Center, ASEAN Documentation and Information Centre, the
Reference Room for Historiography, Ethnology and Anthropology, etc.
In 2010, the Academic Degree Commission under the State Council ratified
Guangxi University for Nationalities as the newly added doctorate project
approval construction unit during 2008 to 2015, three doctoral subjects:
Ethnology, Asian-African Language and Literature, Chinese Ethnic Language
and Literature are building.
Guangxi University for Nationalities has 1184 enrolled faculty members,
These include 717 full-time teachers, 130 professors and 210 associate
professors. The excellent teaching group provides an effective guarantee
for the high quality of education, moreover forms the strong research
capability. In the recent five years, our university undertakes 716
items of research projects, thereinto 66 state-level topics. At the
same time, it builds 16 regional essence courses, 2 national essence
course, and 4 professional characteristics construction units under
Ministry of Education. It undertakes 70 education reform projects above
the provincial levels. In recent years, our students achieved excellent
results in the various national social, technological, cultural, artistic,
sporting events.
After 60 years development，Guangxi University for Nationalities forms
the national, regional and international characteristic. It trains a
large number of talents for modernization of Guangxi and China-ASEAN
exchanges and cooperation.
National
Active support for the minority and the development of minority nationality
regions is the major policy which the Communist Party of China and the
Chinese government insisted all along. Guangxi University for Nationalities
persists in maintaining the aim of orientating to ethnic minorities
and minority areas, gives precedence to minority students, the students
in our university are from 32 nationalities of 25 provinces, autonomous
regions, and municipalities, the minority students account for 45 percent,
most of them from minority areas. Since the foundation, our university
has trained more than 100,000 minority nationality cadres and various
professionals.
Guangxi University for Nationalities is also the important base for
ethnic theory, policy and culture research, it scores great successes
in researching on Zhuang, Yao and other minority nationalities in south
China, as well as the research on cross-frontiers nationality in China
and ASEAN countries. The philosophy edition and social science edition
of the Journal of Guangxi University for Nationalities are the core
journal in the Chinese Ethnology, Anthropology and Comprehensive Liberal
Arts respects.
The teaching group of Ethnology is the national teaching group, Ethnology
and Chinese Minority Language and Literature are national professional
characteristics, Ethnology subject is provincial key subject. The Zhuang
Research Centre and the Yao Research Centre is provincial key research
base of human social science. Our university builds the research base
for Guangxi intangible cultural heritage together with the Department
of Culture of Autonomous Region, builds the training base for Guangxi
ethnic traditional sports together with People's Council of Autonomous
Region.
Regional
The important mission of the Guangxi University for Nationalities is
to train the talents for the new development of Guangxi, the construction
of Beibu Gulf Economic Circle. In the development orientation, subject
construction, adjustment and development of specialty and personnel
training respects. Guangxi University for Nationalities constantly adjusts
to meet the needs of regional economy development. To optimize and strengthen
the human business subjects, to develop and expand the science and engineering
subjects, to consummate the disciplinary system constantly, to train
the talents who are needed urgently and broadly for the regional economic
society development.
Focusing on the central task of doctorate program construction, speed
up the construction of Professional Master Degree Programs; improve
the level of running school. Speed up the construction of ASEAN College,
for adapting to the need of development of regional economic society,
the China-ASEAN Exchanges and Cooperation, as well as training the high-level
and international talents. At the same time, to improve the university’s
research ability and service ability, to strengthen the cooperation
with local governments, to develop scientific cooperation, to build
practice base, to develop project together, to offer technological services
and to provide intellectual support for regional economic construction.
Guangxi University for Nationalities has 1 national training base, 5
key subjects in municipal level, 4 key laboratories and training bases
in municipal level, 5 key research bases and key construction research
bases of human social science in municipal level, and 11 construction
projects of characteristic and superior subject laboratories belong
to the projects which are built by the central and local governments
together. These research institutions form studying platform for training
the high-level talents and provide talents for regional economic development.
International
Guangxi University for Nationalities began to set up the Southeast Asian
Languages major in 1964, now including Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, Cambodian,
Burmese, Indonesian, Malay, English and French, it is the university
that contains the most complete Asian Languages in China, and becomes
the training base for China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN exchanges and
cooperation. It drives the development of subject grouping, such as:
China-ASEAN language culture, political and law, economic and trade,
trade caravan, these improve the international level of university.
Guangxi University for Nationalities established the friendly cooperative
relationship with 90 universities, they are distributed in more than
10 countries and areas, like Thailand, Vietnam, Britain, Japan, etc.
The cooperation with the universities in ASEAN countries is particularly
active, we exchange the abroad student with each other, Guangxi University
for Nationalities fosters the graduated student together with Thailand
and Vietnam, and establishes the Confucius Institutes together with
Mahasarakham University in Thailand and Laos National University. Our
school sent a large number of Chinese teachers and international Chinese
Language Volunteer Teachers to several countries.
Guangxi University for Nationalities has enrolled more than 5,500 abroad
students from 28 countries. In the first 6 months of 2010, there are
768 foreign students in our university, and nearly 2000 our students
are sent to southeast Asian countries to further their study every year.
Till now, there are 3,934 foreign examinees from 58 countries attended
the HSK examination in our university. Guangxi University for Nationalities
has become the important window and base for China-ASEAN exchanges and
cooperation.
Guangxi University for Nationalities has been designated an irregular
language training base for undergraduate student; the Overseas Chinese
language teachers training school with the state financial support;
the key school to support neighboring countries teaching Chinese; the
receiving school for the recipients of Chinese Government Scholarship;
China-ASEAN Legal Training Base, Guangxi-ASEAN tourism talents training
base, higher examination place for HSK, the examination place for test
on the ability of Teaching Chinese.
The school motto of Guangxi University for Nationalities is “strive
for virtue and knowledge, harmony without sameness.” This motto is our
Education Aim for nearly sixty years; it reflects the Guangxi University
